Ainos mount
The highest mountain of Kefalonia is the Ainos mount which culminates with 1628m.
This mountain, emerged from the sea, is famous since antiquity. Some would see it even in descriptions of Homer. In any case, impossible not to notice it.
Take the road which, at the beginning of Argostóli, leads to the Ainos mount. This giant emerges suddenly from a thick forest of black fir trees whose branches have the characteristic to rise upwards.
The Ainos Mount was called the black mountain by the Venetian ones because of its forest cover of a dark green.
These baptized fir trees “Fir tree of Kefalonia” (Abies Cephalonica) exist only here. In 1962 was created the “National park of the Ainos Mount” to protect the animal species and especially the rich local flora in more than one way.
Others wonders hide there, like a large variety of orchids, of which certain endemic, just like the violet of kefalonia.
The Ainos is also a refuge for the large raptors and the small mammals.
The fresh air had encouraged the authorities to build a sanatorium which was abandoned after 1953. If you have good shoes, you can leave your car to the level of the aerials and
to start the rise until the top which dominates a chaos of rocks (2 Hours roundtrip).
