Sclavos Wines
The Sclavos family has been settled for centuries in Kefalonia, one of the branches of the family came to settle on the island in 1700 from the port of Odessa on the Black Sea in modern Ukraine to apply wheat distribution contracts with their boats.
Documents from 1860 indicate that the great-great-grandfather of Evriviadis, the current operator, owned a large winery in Odessa.
In 1919, following the Russian Revolution, Evriviadis (the grandfather) returned to the island to his 6 hectare property where he planted his first vines of Mavrodaphne and Vostilidi, some of which are still cultivated today.
Two generations later, the estate's vines are still cultivated with the same care. In addition to its harvest Sclavos buys the production of 4 additional hectares of Robola from other wine growers.
In 1986 organic farming began and ten years later began biodynamic management practices on part of the vineyard.
The characteristic wines of the Domaine are subjected to winemaking practices including the use of natural yeasts, without the addition of sulphite or filtration and are certified organic.
Sclavos prefers to cultivate local varieties well adapted to the terroir, mainly the Mavrodaphne and Vostilidi grape varieties.
The average yields of Sclavos wines rarely exceed 30 hl / ha, some even going as high as 16 hl / ha. The vines are not irrigated and benefit from the limestone terroir of the Robola area on the slopes of Mount Ainos, and the limestone, clay and sandstone soils of the Paliki peninsula.
Since 2015, the winery has been transformed into a company with the 50% participation of the Zisimatos family and is now called SKLAVOS - ZISIMATOS WINERY.
