Korgialenio Historic And Cultural Museum
This museum, installed at the lower level of the Library, has existed since 1962, its aim is to preserve the cultural and historical legacies after the destruction of the 1953 earthquake.
The objects relate the daily life of the inhabitants of the island who have been affected by historical events such as foreign occupations, union with Greece, wars, earthquakes, etc.
The objective of the museum is not only to preserve the historical memory of a lost world but to show the life and the particular cultural development of the island.
The museum studies all aspects of both urban and rural life (such as the codification of dresses and costumes, furnishings and utensils in homes, family and social life, entertainment, folk art, as well as as ecclesiastical art and the cutual rites of the inhabitants. In addition, the museum covers the architecture dating from before the earthquake and the reconstruction which followed. It honors the personalities whether they are of Cephalonian origin or not, but who have left their mark on the island.
- the exhibits tell the story of the island from the Venetian conquest (around 1500) until the destruction of Kefalonia in the 1953 earthquake.
- Several sections (urban, rural, ecclesiastical, photo):
- aspects such as economics and politics during different periods such as those of the British, the French, the Turks.
- collection of many important historical documents, portraits, and collections of objects
- personal memories of personalities from Kefalonia, nearly 3000 photos, maps, tools, books and costumes.
- a remarkable folklore collection: among other things, you can see needlework, silverware, porcelain, domestic and agricultural tools,
- a traditional bedroom has been restored.
- Collections of Byzantine icons (15th century)
The collections were enriched mainly by donations of cephaloniotes. Household objects, furniture, photographs, icons and ecclesiastical utensils, as well as valuable archives were methodically gathered and exhibited.
