The Melissinos family was one of the families of the Byzantine artisocracy. Descended from Emperor Michael Ragkavi, their members were important dignitaries of the empire. The Solomos family is a very old Venetian family. In 1500 AD, as a reward for taking the fortress of old Navarino near Pylos, the Solomos family received significant land in Cephalonia, and Alissos Solomos became the first Venetian commander of the island which had just been conquered by Venice.
