The closest to our villas, the Petrakopouls winery is located in Thiramonas, Nikos Petrakopoulos perpetuates a centuries-old family tradition. As a descendant of the Melissinos and Solomos families, he aspires to make his personal mark on the island's wine culture, drawing on his local grape varieties. If you find any information on a producer named Melissinos, this is the same producer who changed their name, perhaps to avoid confusion with another Cretan producer who is also called Melissinos. The Melissinos family was one of the families of the Byzantine artisocracy. Descended from Emperor Michael Ragkavi, their members were important dignitaries of the empire. After the fall of Constantinople, Richardos Melissinos took refuge in Kefalonia and became the ancestor of the great family of this island. The Solomos family is a very old Venetian family. In 1500 AD, as a reward for taking the fortress of old Navarino near Pylos, the Solomos family received significant land in Cephalonia, and Alissos Solomos became the first Venetian commander of the island which had just been conquered by Venice. The estate, which now houses the winery, was once the family farm, with the ground floor always being used for the production and storage of wine, which she had bottled for her own use since the 1950s.
